Writing Prompt 3/300: What is your favourite piece of art? What do you love about it?
Art is a funny thing. It is subjective, personal, someone’s story. One of my first jobs as a teenager was working in an art supply store and I was surrounded by people creating and I was inspired. I loved the idea of being an artist. While I am a creative person, I’m not really an artistic person. I don’t have much artistic talent. Despite taking numerous art classes throughout high school, having a degree in architecture and running a creative problem solving business. Sadly none of those equate to knowing how to draw or paint really.
What I am good at is mimicking what others have done. I can look at most pieces of art and pull apart the process of how it is created and try to recreate it. My hubby hates going to art shows with me because I’m always saying I can recreate something someone else has made.
And then there’s the part of me who loves starting a project. I love thinking about it, researching what others have done, planning how I’m going to mimick the work and perhaps add some of my own flare to it.
All this is to say that one of my favourite pieces of art is an unfinished painting in our place that I started in highschool but never finished. It has the background started and a charcoal sketch. And that’s it. I own all the paints to finish it and have probably lost the original artwork that I was trying to mimick and so it stands as a testament to the beauty of work in progress.
