Giving up?

I watched an ant carrying a piece of food around for about 10 minutes. The piece of food must have been at least 3 times as big as the ant, I am not sure if the piece of food weighed more than the ant or not, but either way the ant seemed very determined. The ant struggled as it brought the piece of food around, it must have thought this is too good to be true, this piece of food will keep me fed for days. There was a puddle of water that made this journey even more challenging. At one point I thought that another ant might come over and help out, or that the ant would figure out a way to get the ant where it needed it to, but then it dropped the piece of food and walked away. I watched for a few more minutes and thought, will the ant come back for its bounty? will another ant come and take it? Eventually I realized that the ant had great wisdom, the ant knew that giving up was the right thing to do.

I was recently in an interview and as the conversation unfolded, I heard myself say “I don’t think I am the best person for the job”. Just like the ant, I knew that this bounty wasn’t for me. It wasn’t about not wanting to try or surrendering to a challenge. I have no other way to describe it, than to say it was intuition.

Letting go of an opportunity is sometimes the best option. It seems hard to believe and even harder to do, but giving up can feel so right.
