Reducing clutter

As I packed backpack for our first long backpack trip, I pondered what I needed and what I could live without, I thought about how we live in abundance. These are luxury problems. I am too used to the mentality of packing for just in case. Just in case I need an extra bathing suit, just in case we go to a fancy dinner, just in case…all these scenarios results in way too much stuff and usually not the stuff I actually needed to begin with. Reducing the weight and size of my bag for 3 weeks was a challenge in restraint and prioritizing. This exercise made me think, what other areas am I planning for “just in case” and ignoring the need to reduce clutter.

The “just in case” mentality goes further than my instincts to cook for leftovers, keep clothes that I don’t really like or even fit me anymore, and clutter my house with trinkets and keepsakes that have long lost their meaning. The perspective affects my mind as well, it floods my thoughts with “what if” scenarios, it has me trying to keep or repair relationships that are no longer good for me and it accumulates clutter that clouds my personal restraint and prioritizing for me.

Reduce the clutter that weighs you down.
